Our first day of 2019 was our last full day in Sri Lanka. Our itinerary for the day was unfortunately car heavy and took us from Udawalawe National Park south to Mirissa. From there we followed the coast west and then north back to Negombo to catch our flight to the Maldives the next morning. Fortunately we had a few stops along the way to break up the day and stretch our legs.
Wait… is that palm tree on fire?
One of the nice things about staying in Ella is that you can easily get to a number of hiking trails and things to see that can be easily accessed. One of them is a hike up Little Adam’s Peak which is how we started our fourth day in Sri Lanka.
Visiting the home of Ceylon tea
Day 3 of our Sri Lankan adventure was supposed to start with with abseiling down a waterfall. Unfortunately, the reality on the ground was that getting to said waterfall was too far out of the way for us to make the rest of the stops on our packed tour.
A golden temple, magic plants and a sacred tooth
Because this was our first big trip without Ella in years, and because Sri Lanka was an add-on to our trip to the Maldives, Katy put together a pretty packed itinerary. In our 5 days we are covering what most would typically do in two weeks.
Having travelled from Negombo (outside Colombo) to Dambulla – the most northern point of our trip – on our first day, our second day saw us go south toward Kandy.
Our fast-paced tour of Sri Lanka Begins
With a milestone birthday approaching, Katy had three things she wanted to accomplish: 1) pay off the mortgage, 2) swim with whale sharks, and 3) go to the Maldives. Since she was kind enough to support me as I launched a startup this past year, objective one has been delayed so we decided to take care of the other two.
But wait, you say, the subject line here says Sri Lanka. WTF?
