5 things you shouldn’t miss in Chicago

I haven’t been to Chicago myself but I do have it on good authority that it’s a great city to visit. So, with an assist from Katy, here are 5 things worth the flight to Chicago:

1) Architectural Boat Cruise

This river cruise takes you past buildings by world-famous architects including Mies van der Rohe, Helmut Jahn and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. I’ve never heard of them either, but thanks to the variety buildings and the great guides, it’s a lot more interesting than it sounds.

2) House of Blues Gospel Brunch

Great music, more food that you can possibly eat, and Mimosas. How can you go wrong when breakfast includes drinks?  Jump right in there and sing-a-long, even you don’t believe the lyrics. More.

3) Frank Lloyd Wright home and studio tour

Did you know Frank Lloyd Wright used his first home to experiment with design concepts that contain the seeds of his architectural philosophy? Well you would if you took this tour. It’s also a great way to see a different part of the city.

4) Cloud Gate, a.k.a. THE BEAN

Just plain cool. Plan on spending more time then you would think. Best to go early and avoid the crowds.

Sure it looks weird, but the reflections tend to inspire you to get creative with your pictures.

5) Sky deck at the Willis Tower

Needless to say, sitting in a glass box that sticks off the side of a building 412 meters high (1,353 ft. for imperialist readers) isn’t for the feint of heart.

It only took Katy 5 minutes to work up the courage to get in the box.

Bonus:

For those who enjoy shopping, or if you’re looking for a high-end restaurant, you can check out the Magnificent Mile.

Done any of these things? Use the comments below if you have anything to add.

  2. Love the Gospel brunch! Also the music scene is to die for in Chicago. great to pick up the local magazine (can’t remember what it’s called) and check out who is playing. more often than not, there is some gem that in any other city it would be crazy hard to get tickets to!
